Author: Mel Carver

Having the proper safety equipment is very important when you are operating or riding on a motorcycle. While a helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment, it will only protect you if it the right type of helmet and it fits properly. Have you ever seen a young child riding on a motorcycle wearing an adult size helmet? In the event of an accident, the helmet would offer no protection to the child’s skull at all.

It is very important that you try on any motorcycle helmet to ensure a proper fit. If you decide to make a purchase over the internet or from a catalog, make sure you are able to return it for a refund if it doesn’t fit well. Keep in mind that each manufacturer sizes their helmets differently. Just because you currently own a size large doesn’t mean that is what you will wear in a different brand. For best results through the mail or internet, measure the circumference of your head and ask them to give you the helmet dimensions. Never purchase a used motorcycle helmet because it may have been involved in an accident and it won’t protect you as it was designed to.

For the best results, try on motorcycle helmets with any accessories you will generally have while riding. For example, many women like to have their hair in a ponytail but may have it straight while trying on a helmet. If you wear prescription glasses while operating your motorcycle, then make sure you take them with you when you are trying on helmets.

A motorcycle helmet needs to fit very securely. Make sure it surrounds your entire head. The chin straps are adjustable but put them in place to ensure you can get them tight enough to fit your face shape. You should also try on the same brand of helmet in one size larger and one size smaller just to make sure you do in fact have the best fitting helmet for your head. For added comfort, consider getting a motorcycle helmet that offers air vents. You can easily slide them opened or closed to allow more air to circulate while wearing it.

You will find motorcycle helmets made from a variety of materials. For the best in safety and quality, choose one that is made from organic fiberglass and layers of carbon fibers. This combination creates a very powerful shock absorbent shell. You also want to make sure the liner features a three layer system. This will offer you additional shock absorption.

If you plan to ride your motorcycle a great deal, consider getting a motorcycle helmet that allows you to easily change the visor. This is a great option for riding during the day and the night. Make sure the visors are fog resistant and offer impact resistance.

Investing in a quality helmet that offers the protection you need while riding a motorcycle isn’t going to be cheap, but it may well be one of the most important investments you make in your life. Statistics show that motorcycle riders who wear a helmet have a 35% less chance of suffering from a head injury. You can fit a helmet that fits well and even have it custom painted to match your motorcycle.

Having the proper safety equipment on you, your motorcycle, wearing protective clothing, and knowing the does and don’t(s) could save your life. We will focus on these and more throughout this series.

With excessive fuel cost and unemployment on the rise, more people are riding motorcycles. In 2000 almost three thousand people were killed riding two wheel motorized vehicles on road and off. In 2007 these numbers rose above five thousand. Weather was not a factor in 98% of these fatalities. Approximately two thirds of these accidents involved collision with another motorist, most usually a passenger vehicle. Most of these drivers never saw the motorcycle before the collision. A very high percent (98% in 2006) of these riders had little or no professional training. Being self taught, or learning from only friends and family.
For the basic or experienced rider course in your location you can call the national toll-free number 1-800-446-9227 or visit the Motorcycle Safety Foundation a non-profit organization dedicated to motorcycle safety.

Dusters were made popular by cow pokes and outlaws of the old west. While these early dusters were made from cloth(s), some have evolved to leather. Leather Dusters can protect you from some of the harshest elements Mother Nature throws at us. These include, but are not limited to, cold, wind, rain, and foremost dust storms. Today they are still popular amongst bikers and cowboys.

The Leather Duster is an absolute must own for almost everyone, man or woman. The brown leather duster is one of the garments featured on our website, “Leather for all Weather”. These dusters comes in a variety of colors and leathers. You will find buffalo, lambskin, and split cowhide leather apparel on our website. Our leather dusters have a removable cape and zip out lining both features are a plus, removing the cape gives the duster a whole new look. They also feature four leg straps two for each leg, this prevents these long trench coats from flapping too much in the wind, and also adds protection to your legs. The leather duster has a total of five pockets! (2 that you can easily slide your hands into, 2 deep pockets on top of the previous mentioned with double snap down covers, and one inside breast pocket) This leather duster will keep you warm while looking stylish. The black leather duster is manufactured from fine quality full grain leather. Any natural markings are a distinct part of the leather which makes your leather duster unique.

Leather products can last a life time and look like new with the proper care. Using mink oil (2-4 times a year) softens the leather and helps prevent creasing and cracks that can occur over time. When applying oils or other treatments to your leather garment, pay special attention to seams and stitching. After applying treatments allow it to soak in for 24 hours then remove excessive treatments with a clean dry cloth.Note: Always test in an inconspicuous area as treatments can change color(s) of some dyes used in leather!

Do not attempt to launder by hand or in the machine. If you want to press your leather set the iron on the lowest setting. Do not use steam! Place a heavy brown paper between the surface of the leather and the iron, constantly moving the iron.

Your leather should be cleaned by a professional specializing in leather care.

A newly ordained deacon was asked to hold a graveside service for someone with no family or friends. It was his first official assignment, so he eagerly agreed.

Taking his duties very seriously, the deacon left early the next morning for the cemetery. However, he made several wrong turns and quickly got himself lost. When he finally arrived more than an hour late, the hearse was nowhere to be seen and the two workmen were eating lunch.

The deacon got out of his car, quickly threw on his vestments, and hurried to the open grave. Looking into the pit, he saw that the vault lid was already in place. With a sigh, he took out his prayer book and read the burial service.

After he had left, one of the workmen said to the other, “Maybe we should have told him he just blessed a septic tank.”

PROPER FIT

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whatever materials one chooses for one’s motorcycle gear, it is important to get the correct fit when purchasing it. Incorrectly fitted garments may result in excessive injury if armor shifts out of position during a riding mishap. Flapping due to loose-fit also creates unnecessary wear and tear, wind drag, noise, and can distract the rider. In the event of a fall, loose garments may grab the road surface, resulting in a tumble rather than a slide.

Please see size charts to insure a proper fit.

NOTE:Please add 2″ to your chest measurement for leather Vests and 4″ for leather Jackets.

ALL MEASUREMENTS ARE IN INCHES

‘MEET ME IN THE STAIRWELL’

You say you will never forget where you were when

you heard the news On September 11, 2001.

Neither will I.

I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room

with a man who called his wife to say ‘Good-Bye.’ I

held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the

peace to say, ‘Honey, I am not going to make it, but it

is OK..I am ready to go.’

I was with his wife when he called as she fed

breakfast to their children. I held her up as she

tried to understand his words and as she realized

he wasn’t coming home that night.

I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a

woman cried out to Me for help. ‘I have been

knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!’ I said.

‘Of course I will show you the way home – only

believe in Me now.’

I was at the base of the building with the Priest

ministering to the injured and devastated souls.

I took him home to tend to his Flock in Heaven. He

heard my voice and answered.

I was on all four of those planes, in every seat,

with every prayer. I was with the crew as they

were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the

believers there, comforting and assuring them that their

faith has saved them.

I was in Texas, Virginia, California, Michigan, Afghanistan.

I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news.

Did you sense Me?

I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew

every name – though not all know Me. Some met Me

for the first time on the 86th floor.

Some sought Me with their last breath.

Some couldn’t hear Me calling to them through the

smoke and flames; ‘Come to Me… this way… take

my hand.’ Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me.

But, I was there.

I did not place you in the Tower that day. You

may not know why, but I do. However, if you were

there in that explosive moment in time, would you have

reached for Me?

Sept. 11, 2001, was not the end of the journey

for you. But someday your journey will end. And I

will be there for you as well. Seek Me now while I may

be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are

‘ready to go.’

I will be in the stairwell of your final moments.

God

Hi

I’m Kenny Manager and Co-Owner of DW Internet Sales. We launched our first e-commerce site the first day of April 2009. Hosting leather motorcycle apparel for ladies, men and kids. After being a member of this site for several months I was about to pull up stake and leave as my website doesn’t fit the natural flow of what I see here. Then things my Mom and Dad taught me started settling in. Learn how to do with what you have, adapt and overcome, never quit playing because you don’t fit in, learn to make your own place in life. So, here I sit typing this post, knowing I will make a place here, as I invest in this site monthly.

DW Internet Sales has greater plans for the coming year, than just selling leather motorcycle apparel. We plan to launch dwinternetsales.com (domain already owned parked free on GoDaddy) where I will start off listing free software and services available to webmasters both seasoned and green (ie; newbies). As the site gains popularity I’ll start adding more tools that are resale.

Another site has to do with salt water fishing and my favorite local watering hole. Can’t give out much detail on this one as we have yet to secure the domain.

We have several blogs around the web in various places both for established businesses and those we are considering.

DW Internet Sales is here for the long haul.

If you have a face book presence I invite you to our page become a fan checkout or blogs, discussions and pictures.

I wish you all great success in what ever you choose to do.

Semi retired custom home builder turned computer geek. I have been building and tearing things down my whole life.

January 23, 2008 I decided to build on the web. I have a presence on a lot of social sites. (myspace, facebook, yuwie, fanbox, twitter, blogger, connect, digg, fubar, thewildride to name a few).

If, you would like to find me on any of these try searching my name first if that doesn’t work my user name on most sites is “kenny8262″.

My greatest accomplishment on the web is “leather for all weather” .

“Leather for all Weather” is an online store catering to the biker community. Launch date for “Leather for all Weather” was April 1,2009. Doesn’t matter if you are a” Hard Core Biker”, “Rolex Rider”, or just a “Motorcycle Enthusiest”, I am sure you can find the “Leather Motorcycle Apparel” to meet your needs. If, for some reason you can’t find that special “Motorcycle Leather Jacket” drop us a line or give us a call. We try to add more products (in a perfect world) on a daily basis (however this is not a perfect world). We accept most major credit cards and have several options for checkout including, “paypal”, “google checkout”,

“ECI-Pay” and now “ELaway” the last of which allows you to put your “leather motorcycle apparel” on laway from 2 to 12 months. For more information visit us today!!

Unambiguous advertising

I go over to the free encyclopedia today, write a post establishing my business. They deleted it calling it “Unambiguous advertising”. Guess if I am going to do research and share things there, I should hire a professional writer to do it for me. I shared information details about my business location, date founded, contact information, and our presence on the web. Apparently they did not take so kindly to the last part. That being said I reread their “terms of service” and decided to put some of my blogs in a pending edit status since I generally have a signature url at the end of all post. I do not want to be known as a “unambiguous advertiser”, in any of my ventures. I am merely trying to get my info on this information highway.

Motorcycle Tool Guide

• Eight-Foot Long Douglas Fir 2X4 - used for levering a bike upright after using a hydraulic jack on the bike.

• Hydraulic Bike Jack/Platform - ingeniously-designed tool for flipping bikes onto their sides, usually when you’re alone in the shop.

• Wire Wheel - cleans rust off old bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you to say, “Hand me ‘nother beer, Bubba!”

• Drill Press - a tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against the Pamela Anderson poster over the bench grinder.

• Oxy Acetylene torch - used almost entirely for lighting those stale garage cigarettes you keep hidden in the back of the Whitworth socket drawer (What wife would think to look in there?) because you can never remember to buy lighter fluid for the Zippo lighter you got from the PX at Fort Campbell.

• Vice-Grips - used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

• Electric Hand Drill - normally used for spinning steel Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also works great for drilling roll-bar mounting holes in the floor of a sports car just above the brake line that goes to the rear axle.

• Mechanic’s Knife - used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on boxes containing leathers or bike covers.

• Hammer - originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive chrome scooter parts not far from the object we are trying to hit.

• Tweezers - a tool for removing wood splinters.

• Phone - tool for calling your neighbor Bubba to see if he has another hydraulic floor jack. • Snap-On Gasket Scraper - theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog-doo off your boot.

• E-Z Out Bolt and Stud Extractor - a tool that snaps off in bolt holes and is ten times harder than any known drill bit.

• Two-Ton Hydraulic Engine Hoist - a handy tool for testing the tensile strength of ground straps and hydraulic clutch lines you may have forgotten to disconnect. Almost capable of lifting a Gold Wing off the floor.

• Craftsman 1/2 x 16 Inch Screwdriver - a large motor mount prying tool that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end without the handle.

• Battery - electrolyte Tester A handy tool for transferring sulfuric acid from scooter battery to the inside of your toolbox after determining that your battery is dead as a doornail, just as you thought. • Hacksaw - one of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

• Trouble Light - the mechanic’s own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, “the sunshine vitamin”, which is not otherwise found in garages at night. Health benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading.

• Air Compressor - a machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty suspension bolts last tightened 40 years ago by someone in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and rounds them off.

• Phillips Screwdriver - normally used to stab the lids of old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splash oil on your shirt; can also be used, as the name implies, to round off Phillips screw heads.

• Timing Light - a stroboscopic instrument for illuminating grease buildup on crankshaft pulleys.

Race with a Harley

I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed
to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really
twisting sections of mountain road with no straight sections to
speak of and where most of the bends have warning signs that
say “MAX SPEED 50 KPH“.

I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those
big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where
handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone.

I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could
catch him, but it wouldn’t be easy. I concentrated on my braking and
cornering. Three corners later, I was on his mudguard. Catching him
was one thing; passing him would prove to be another.

Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the
mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly
got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I’d
manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but
when we came out he’d get on the throttle and out-power me. His
horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me
more determined than ever.

My only hope was to out-brake him. I held off squeezing the lever
until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an
instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of
his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before
the road straightens out and he would pass me for good.

But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I
stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the
canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see
him in my rear-view mirror.

Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles
before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I
was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the
tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more
than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. Though it was
not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the mountain and I had
preserved the proud tradition of one of the best bits of Brit iron.

I will always remember that moment. I don’t think I’ve ever pedaled
so hard in my life. And, some of the credit must go to Raleigh
cycles, as well. They really make a great bicycle…

Stolen Lunch

A biker is riding by the zoo when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage.

Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to

slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents. The biker jumps off his

bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl and the biker

brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has seen the whole scene and addressing the biker, says, “Sir, this

was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life.” The biker

humbly responded, “Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just

saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.”

“Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and

tomorrow’s paper will have this on the first page. What kind of motorcycle do you

ride?” “A Harley Davidson!” he said proudly! “Hmmmm?” said the reporter

suspiciously. The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed

brings news of his actions, and reads on first page: BIKER GANG MEMBER

ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH.

Arthur Davidson in Heaven

Arthur Davidson, of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation died and went to Heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, “Since you’ve been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is you can hang out with anyone you want in heaven.
Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, “I want to hang out with God.” St. Peter took Arthur to the throne room, and introduced him to God.
Arthur then asked God, “Hey, aren’t you the inventor of woman?” God said, “Oh, yes.” “Well,” said Arthur, “professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:
There is too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
It chatters constantly at high speeds.
Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust, and finally.
The maintenance costs are outrageous.
Hmmm, you may have some good points there,” replied God, “hold on.” God went to his celestial Super Computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it.”Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed,” God said to Arthur, “but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention then yours”.

A crusty old biker, out on a long summer ride in the country, pulls up to a tavern in the middle of nowhere, parks his bike takes off his vented leather jacket and walks inside. As he passes through the swinging doors, he sees a sign hanging over the bar……. COLD BEER: $2.00 HAMBURGER: $2.25 CHEESEBURGER: $2.50 CHICKEN SANDWICH: $3.50 HAND JOB: $50.00 Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary payment, the old biker walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female bartender serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled farmers. She glides down behind the bar to the old biker. "Yes?" she inquires with a wide, knowing smile, "May I help you?" The old biker leans over the bar, "I was wondering young lady," he whispers, "are you the one who gives the hand jobs?" She looks into his eyes with that wide smile and purrs, "Why yes. Yes, I sure am." The old biker leans closer and into her left ear whispers softly, "Well, wash your hands real good, ’cause I want a cheeseburger."

All there is to know…

“Naked Leather” simply means Unblemished. There is no scars or uneven grain in the garment

Split grain is any leather that is not from the actual outside layer of a cow’s hide – better known as suede. It is more flexible than top grain leather. It is not as durable, or waterproof as top-grain.

Top,full grain leather is from the smooth outside layer of a cow’s hide. It is more durable and stiffer than split grain, and fares well against water and abrasions.

Just like for the cow.. Leather adjusts to the temperature to keep you warm in winter, and still cool for spring and fall making IT the perfect garment material.

When choosing your full grain leather, keep in mind the types of conditioning…

Oil-tanned Leather is breathable, but the leather can wear down and become less durable over time without periodic Mink oil (or other oil-based) conditioning (pbevolution Jackets,Chaps, vests)

Silicone tanned leather is more resistant to water, but is stiffer and takes longer to break in. Used in those new “pbevolution” boots you’re looking to buy!!

There are 4 basic kinds of waterproofing methods for Leather

Oil Based: Oil Based compounds soften leather making it more plyable and, more rip proof.

Wax Based: Wax-based products are quite functional in waterproofing riding boots, provided the wax is reapplied regularly. Be sure to buff the boots after applying to get rid of the excess- it can attract dirt and grime. The main drawback is that wax based waterproofers cut down on the breathablity of the boot. Your feet don’t get as much air when perspiring, and once the boots are wet, they take longer to dry.(not recommended for jackets,Vests etc)

Silicone Based: Stitching and glue can break down under the high petroleum content of silicone products. Your leather will also give off fumes while drying. Silicone products stiffen the leather when exposed to low temperatures, and they do not aid in conditioning the leather. Silicone is recommended as opposed to wax based products for boots with a Gore-Tex liner, because it is more breathable.

Water Based:Fluoropolymer: This type of waterproofing comes in a spray can, and has been rated the best by leading authorities on the subject. It can be used on leather that have been previously treated by a different method. It dries quickly, repels stains, and does not change the appearance of most leather but, does not condition the leather (test treat an inconspicuous area first if concerned about staining)

There is also a simple “waterproof rule” to follow when buying leather…

Look for garments with as few seams as possible. Stitched seams become weak spots as the materials degrade, inviting leaks.

Leather ages gracefully and can last a lifetime with proper care right from the start.

* NUMBER ONE! Rub Mink oil (available everywhere in shoe care department) into garment ONCE if not TWICE a year. This keeps the leather from drying out and cracking (just like your skin, if it is dry, it cracks and splits)the cow is no longer there to produce the oils.
* Always hang leather garments on wide or padded hangers to maintain their shape.
* Use shoetrees in footwear and stuff empty handbags with tissue to help retain their shape.
* Never store leather goods in plastic or other non-breathable covers. This will cause leather to become dry.
* Allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally away from any heat source.
* Leather can be treated with a conditioner (mink oil) to restore flexibility while suede can be brushed with a terry towel to restore its look.
* In winter, promptly remove salt deposits from garments and footwear by sponging with clear water, then follow with the above treatment for wet or damp leather.
* Avoid very humid and dry environments as well as direct sunlight.
* Do not use waxes, silicone products or other leather preparations that impair a garment’s ability to breathe.
* Wrinkles should hang out. If ironing is desired, set iron on rayon setting, use heavy brown wrapping paper as a pressing cloth on right side of the garment and a quick hand to prevent overheating and shine.
* Avoid spraying perfumes or hair sprays while wearing your garment and do not apply pins, adhesive badges or tape.
* Hems may be fixed with a tiny amount of rubber cement. For best results see a leather care professional.
* All products designed to be used at home should be tested on an inconspicuous part of the garment.

Malware is short for “malicious software;” it includes viruses — programs that copy themselves without your permission — and spyware, programs installed without your consent to monitor or control your computer activity. Criminals are hard at work thinking up creative ways to get malware on your computer. They create appealing web sites, desirable downloads, and compelling stories to lure you to links that will download malware, especially on computers that don’t use adequate security software. Then, they use the malware to steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud.
It doesn’t have to be that way. So says a website with tips from the federal government and the technology industry that is helping consumers be on guard against Internet fraud, secure their computers, and protect their personal information. Indeed, OnGuardOnline.gov says consumers can minimize the havoc malware can wreak, and reclaim their computers and their electronic information.
Computers may be infected with malware if they:

slow down, malfunction, or display repeated error messages;
wont shut down or restart;
serve up a lot of pop-up ads, or display them when youre not surfing the web; or
display web pages or programs you didnt intend to use, or send emails you didnt write.
If you suspect malware is on your computer
If you suspect malware is lurking on your computer, stop shopping, banking, and other online activities that involve user names, passwords, or other sensitive information. Malware on your computer could be sending your personal information to identity thieves.
Then, confirm that your security software is active and current: at a minimum, your computer should have anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a firewall. You can buy stand-alone programs for each element or a security suite that includes these programs from a variety of sources, including commercial vendors or from your Internet Service Provider. Security software that comes pre-installed on a computer generally works for a short time unless you pay a subscription fee to keep it in effect. In any case, security software protects against the newest threats only if it is up-to-date. Thats why it is critical to set your security software and operating system (like Windows or Apples OS) to update automatically.

Some scam artists distribute malware disguised as anti-spyware software. Resist buying software in response to unexpected pop-up messages or emails, especially ads that claim to have scanned your computer and detected malware. Thats a tactic scammers have used to spread malware, and that has attracted the attention of the Federal Trade Commission, the nations consumer protection agency, as well as a number of state law enforcement agencies. Visit OnGuardOnline.gov to find a list of security tools from legitimate security vendors selected by GetNetWise, a project of the Internet Education Foundation.

Once you confirm that your security software is up-to-date, run it to scan your computer for viruses and spyware. Delete everything the program identifies as a problem. You may have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

If you suspect that your computer still is infected, you may want to run a second anti-spyware or anti-virus program. Some computer security experts recommend installing one program for real-time protection, and another for periodic scans of your machine as a way to stop malware that might have slipped past the first program.

Finally, if the problem persists after you exhaust your own ability to diagnose and treat it, you might want to call for professional help. If your computer is covered by a warranty that offers free tech support, contact the manufacturer. Before you call, write down the model and serial number of your computer, the name of any software you’ve installed, and a short description of the problem. Your notes will help you give an accurate description to the technician.

If you need professional help, if your machine isn’t covered by a warranty, or if your security software isn’t doing the job properly, you may need to pay for technical support. Many companies — including some affiliated with retail stores — offer tech support via the phone, online, at their store, or in your home. Telephone or online help generally are the least expensive ways to access support services — especially if there’s a toll-free helpline — but you may have to do some of the work yourself. Taking your computer to a store usually is less expensive than hiring a technician or repair person to come into your home.

Once your computer is back up and running, think about how malware could have been downloaded to your machine, and what you could do to avoid it in the future. If your security software or operating system was out-of-date, download the newest version and set it to update automatically. Use the opportunity to back up important files by copying them onto a removable disc. Other ways to minimize the chances of a malware download in the future:

Don’t click on a link in an email or open an attachment unless you know who sent it and what it is. Links in email can send you to sites that automatically download malware to your machine. Opening attachments — even those that appear to come from a friend or co-worker — also can install malware on your computer.
Download and install software only from websites you know and trust. Downloading free games, file-sharing programs, and customized toolbars may sound appealing, but free software can come with malware.
Talk about safe computing. Tell your kids that some online activity can put a computer at risk: clicking on pop-ups, downloading free games or programs, or posting personal information.
Finally, monitor your computer for unusual behavior. If you suspect your machine has been exposed to malware, take action immediately. Report problems with malware to your ISP so it can try to prevent similar problems and alert other subscribers, as well as to the FTC (www.ftc.gov).
For More Information
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters consumer complaints into the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database and investigative tool used by hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.
